Rivian’s CEO on Tesla’s Cybertruck, Ferrari’s Luce, and What Happens If the R2 Fails Tech
In a frank and wide-ranging discussion, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe offered a candid assessment of the evolving electric vehicle landscape, branding Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck as a product destined for a "very, very niche" market. Scaringe also detailed the immense pressure on Rivian’s upcoming R2 SUV, unequivocally stating that the company’s future as currently envisioned hinges entirely on its success.
Scaringe, who founded Rivian in 2009 after earning his PhD from MIT studying internal combustion engines, has overseen a decade of stealth development and a tumultuous public journey. Rivian’s 2021 IPO was one of the largest in US history, momentarily valuing the company at over $100 billion. However, the road has been fraught with challenges. The company lost $3.6 billion in 2025 and has burned through nearly $25 billion in the past eight years, spending more money than almost any other pure EV maker during that period. Despite impressive customer satisfaction scores, Rivian has sold 175,000 R1 vehicles since 2021, a stark contrast to Tesla’s 8 million units over the same timeframe. Yet, recent strategic partnerships, including Volkswagen Group’s commitment of up to $5.8 billion to co-develop software and electrical architecture, and Uber’s planned $1.25 billion investment for 50,000 autonomous robotaxis, signal growing confidence in Rivian’s underlying technology and long-term vision.
Critiquing the Cybertruck and the Need for EV Diversity
Asked directly about the perceived failure of Tesla’s Cybertruck, Scaringe acknowledged the boldness of the design but affirmed its limited appeal. "You sometimes take big swings with something that’s wild, and they definitely took a very big swing," Scaringe said. "It’s turned out it’s not a mass-market product, but it was pretty clear from the beginning that it wasn’t going to be. It was very, very niche in terms of some of the design decisions and product trade-offs [Tesla] made." He contrasted the Cybertruck with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, which he described as products that "don’t push anybody away." While applauding the courage behind the Cybertruck, Scaringe concluded it would remain a niche offering.
Scaringe's observations extend beyond Tesla, touching on the broader market. Discussing Ferrari’s Luce, he praised the "incredibly intentional" design from Jony Ive and Marc Newson, particularly highlighting the "phenomenal" interior haptics, switches, and buttons. More broadly, he emphasized the critical need for more choice in the EV market, especially in the United States, where the Model 3 and Model Y dominate 50 to 60 percent of market share. "If we want to electrify, we need to have a lot more choice than just those two," he stated, arguing that Tesla’s significant market share is a reflection of a "wildly underserved market," not a healthy one.
He also weighed in on Polestar’s struggles, suggesting their challenge lies in getting the overall package right – the price, technology integration, and compelling features for a broad audience. "The cars look great. I don’t think it’s a design issue. But I do think the whole package—price, content, features—just hasn’t connected with consumers in the way that we hope R2 does, or certainly like a Model Y has connected."
R2: The Linchpin for Rivian’s Future
For Rivian, the stakes for the R2 are monumental. The company has invested billions in a vertically integrated structure, developing its own software, electronics, silicon, motors, gearboxes, and power electronics entirely in-house. This comprehensive approach extends to building its own sales and service networks, parts distribution, vehicle distribution, and large vehicle prep centers across the country.
"If Rivian stayed a 50,000-unit-a-year company, that would be an extraordinarily expensive way to do that," Scaringe explained. "We built all that contemplating R2. And so that means, leading up to R2, we spent a lot of money. It’s not an accident. It’s an intention. It’s the plan. But the plan is to be a large company. The plan is for R2 to work."
The implications of R2’s failure are stark. "So if R2 doesn’t work, if R2 were to be a flop, we would have to really take a step back and really reconfigure the business," Scaringe admitted. "To have a 6,000-person engineering team to sell 50,000 vehicles just wouldn’t make sense. To be vertically integrating deep down to the silicon as we have would be impossible to rationalize. So, absolutely, the future of the company as we’ve designed it depends on R2’s success."
Rivian is preparing for significant volume, with the Normal facility in Illinois capable of 155,000 units, and a new plant in Georgia being built in two phases. Phase one capacity has been increased to 300,000 units due to strong initial reactions, with plans to support other variants like the R3 and European expansion.
The Evolving Landscape of Autonomy and Interior Design
Rivian's commitment to in-house technology also extends to its complete autonomy stack, which is separate from the Volkswagen deal. This proprietary technology could become a crucial asset, offering a lucrative licensing opportunity for other OEMs, especially if vehicle sales don't meet targets. While Scaringe acknowledges this potential, he stresses that Rivian is "playing to win" with its vehicles, minimizing focus on failure scenarios.
However, Rivian faces a challenge in convincing customers about its evolving autonomy features. Early R1 customers, who paid upwards of $80,000, received a Gen 1 autonomy system (Mobileye-based) that Scaringe now describes as a "dead-end" that "was the wrong approach." He says the company completely reset nearly at the same time the R1 launched, pivoting to a transformer-based "data flywheel" system, Gen 2, which began rolling out in late 2024. The R2 will launch with an "in-between step," internally called Gen 2.5, which is an improvement over the R1's current system. The true breakthrough, Gen 3, will come later for the R2, featuring in-house silicon with 1,600 trillion operations per second, better cameras, and lidar, aiming for point-to-point supervised driving. Scaringe was careful to clarify that the launch R2 will not be capable of unsupervised Level 3 or Level 4 autonomy.
Addressing customer skepticism about buying into an evolving tech stack, Scaringe draws a parallel to the smartphone market. "Why does someone buy an iPhone 17? People buy an iPhone 17 fully knowing there’s gonna be an iPhone 18. Why buy an 18 when you know there will be a 19?" He added that autonomy is developing faster than society is ready for and is currently not a major purchase criterion for most customers, impacting only about 20 to 25 percent of buyers.
On interior design, Scaringe expressed his appreciation for the tactile experience of Ferrari Luce’s physical buttons, contrasting with Rivian’s multi-touch heavy approach in the R1. He explained Rivian’s decision was a "principled decision to have a very high degree of updatability in the vehicle where features can evolve." However, for the R2, Rivian has introduced "Halo Wheels" on the steering wheel, offering haptic, software-defined mechanical interaction. These allow for a "clicking" feel that can be adjusted via software, aiming to bridge the gap between digital and physical controls. Scaringe believes the Luce’s approach to blending multi-touch and buttons "will end up being quite influential on how people do interiors."
Despite Rivian's high customer satisfaction, the company has faced paradoxically low reliability ratings. Scaringe attributes this to lagging indicators based on older 2021-2023 R1 models, comparing it to judging a seasoned automaker like Toyota by its first few models. He is confident that the R2 will represent a "significant step up" in reliability performance.
The global EV market is intensifying, with Chinese makers like Xiaomi demonstrating incredibly fast turnaround times, launching their first car just two years after announcing their entry. As Rivian plans expansion into Europe, it will face direct competition from these agile players, adding another layer of challenge to its ambitious growth strategy.
The Bigger Picture: A Pivotal Moment for Rivian
Rivian stands at a crucial juncture. Its bold vision of vertical integration and proprietary technology has demanded immense investment, setting the stage for either significant scale or a fundamental restructuring. The R2 is not merely a new model; it is the cornerstone upon which the entire operational and financial edifice of the company is built. With Scaringe’s candid views on competitors and the high stakes for his own company, the next few years will definitively shape Rivian’s place in the global electric vehicle market, impacting not only its innovative technology and American manufacturing but also the broader push for sustainable mobility worldwide.
